Lately, Yoga has gained much prominence for its effect on the body, and the focus has been on the physical side, on gaining strength and flexibility, twisting to unimaginable poses, rather than the effect on the mind and overall consciousness. There is rampant commercialisation of Yoga, with several brands devoted to yoga apparel, and on constantly revamping it to new styles which go against its own philosophy. Beyond the physical postures (asanas) that nurture our bodies, yoga encompasses meditation and breathing exercises (pranayama) to calm the mind and enhance mental serenity. Especially in our modern, fast-paced world, where stillness and mindfulness have become increasingly elusive, incorporating moments of tranquillity into our lives has become more vital than ever. Yoga is not just for the body, it embodies the harmony of body, soul, and mind.
Instead of singularly viewing Yoga as an exercise routine, lets incorporate its philosophy in our daily life.
1. Awareness and Mindfulness: Yoga guides us towards a deeper self-awareness, urging us to be fully present in every aspect of life. Whether it’s walking, cooking, or exercising, bring your attention to the present moment and embrace the rhythm of your breath. Through this practice, you can cultivate the ability to observe and understand your emotions, effectively addressing anger and anxiety, and prevent negativity from overpowering you. With repeated practice, you gain the power to respond consciously to situations, with calm and thoughtful action instead of impulsive reactions.
Asana suggestion- Vrikshasana, or Tree Pose- Vrikshasana cultivates awareness, stability, and a sense of harmony between the body, mind, and nature.
2. Gratitude- Cultivate gratitude by consciously acknowledging and appreciating the blessings in your life. Each day, take a moment to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. This practice shifts your focus to the positive aspects of your life and nurtures a sense of contentment.
Asana suggestions – Ustrasana or Camel Pose -Expands the chest and opens the heart center. Increases feelings of gratitude, compassion, and self-love. Balasana or Child Pose– Bow down and surrender, this gentle resting pose nurtures a sense of grounding and provides a space to reflect on the blessings in your life
3. Self-care: In the midst of our busy lives and constant interactions, we often overlook the most crucial connection of all – the connection with ourselves. We forget to pause and ask ourselves important questions: “Do I need rest?”, “Am I hurting?”, “Am I feeling stressed?”.
Asana suggestions -Pranayam or Breathwork- Within the rhythmic flow of your breath, lies the gateway to self-discovery. Through intentional breathwork, you unlock the power to calm the mind, invigorate the body, and tap into a wellspring of inner peace. Shavasana or the Corpse pose -As you rest in stillness, you release the weight of the world and experience a deep sense of rejuvenation.
Enjoy the journey of embodying the essence of yoga in your everyday life. Namaste!
